Mera Putih was recommended to a friend of mine while we were staying in the Seminyak in the south of Bali. Seminyak is a bustling, touristy part of Bali that is known for its great beaches, lounge style cocktail bar on those beaches and for the large number of truly world class restaurants in the area.
After numerous trips to Bali, and of course Seminyak, we were looking for something a little bit different from the usual Seminyak fare. That’s when we were recommended to go to Mera Putih.
“At Merah Putih, they serve classic Indonesian cuisine using ingredients of the highest quality alongside creative dishes that experiment with traditional spices and flavours from across the archipelago.”
My only previous experience of Indonesian food had been in the local Warungs/restaurants, so I had no idea that the local flavours could be so elegantly and tastefully combined into some of the most original meals I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying.
Tradition is adhered to in that all dishes and cutlery are served in the middle of the table, encouraging you to share your meals in the traditional Indonesian manner and perfectly compliments the blend of old and new that Mera Putih is becoming popular for.
We shared the Jankang (soft shell crab) Sulawesi Barramundi (cuttlefish and coconut) and Ikan Bakar Sambal Mattah (chargrilled fish with eggplants and shallots) as well as a few glasses of delicious white wine imported from Australia. We couldn’t resist the allure of the dessert menu and enjoyed a scintillating treat of caramelized bananas, cassava, coconut cream and dates.
All of the food was absolutely delicious and completely original. Although not cheap, Mera Putih offers up a great, original menu, a beautiful atmosphere and friendly staff, it is definitely worth a visit if you are in Seminyak.
